Find me on:

Silvernest, City Year and are partnering to bring affordable housing to City Year AmeriCorps Members in Miami!

Last year in the Miami-Dade area, these dedicated young professionals (ages 18-24) provided mentorship and academic support to more than 6,500 students at 18 different schools.

City Year AmeriCorps Members commit to a year of service providing mentorship and academic support to at-risk students in high-need communities. They also provide teachers and principals with classroom support and contribute to a positive school culture, climate and community.

For all their hard work, these amazing young people earn stipends of roughly $15,000 per year—meaning they have about $500/month for a place to live. In Miami, the average one-bedroom apartment rents for $1,819 per month.

Easing Housing Costs for Youth Mentors and Miami Seniors, Too

Silvernest, and City Year Miami have teamed up to demonstrate the value of homesharing for City Year AmeriCorps Members, homeowners and their communities. By supporting at-risk students and their teachers, City Year AmeriCorps Members are helping to build a stronger Miami-Dade community. At the same time, many older homeowners in the area have space in their homes to share and are looking for extra income as well as companionship. Homesharing with Silvernest is a way to help them both.

"Finding housing in Miami was certainly a struggle," says Julianne, an AmeriCorps Member at Miami Jackson Senior High School. "The modest stipend is difficult to live on and if you are coming from out of state without family or friends in Miami to help support you, finding a reasonable place to live that fits the AmeriCorps Member budget is nearly impossible."

Joe Castaldi, the Managing Director of Impact at City Year Miami, says, "City Year Miami AmeriCorps Members are committed to serving their community, specifically its students, having made made an incredible sacrifice to improve outcomes for students across the city. This partnership can alleviate one of the biggest challenges facing our AmeriCorps Members in securing housing on a modest living allowance, allowing them to invest even more time and energy in their students. It is truly amazing to see the community rally around young people that are seeking to make a difference, investing in the future of our great city. Thank you in advance for your support. "

"This partnership  has the potential to change so many lives—City Year AmeriCorps Members working long hours to improve outcomes for students will get affordable rent, guidance in navigating their new city and an experienced friend," says Phyllis Segal, Vice President of "Homeowners helping their community will get a source of modest income, a chance to mentor plus the prospect of comfort, security and help around the house. And most of all, children and teachers in local public schools will get an influx of energetic, young people eager to help them succeed."
