Books for the Nest - BOOMER REINVENTION: How to Create Your Dream Career Over 50

John Tarnoff doesn’t sugar-coat anything – including his own career ups and downs. As a Hollywood executive, he unabashedly admits to being fired 39% of the time over a 40-year career. But reinvent he did – as psychologist, teacher, and non-traditional career reinvention coach.

Looking at the rate of retirement savings for the boomer generation, the effect of longer life, and the ageism that seemingly exploded in the recession, Tarnoff has written an upbeat, but honest guide to finding the right fit for your career after 50. Using his own career and that of seven other boomers who reinvented themselves, he shares obstacles, resources, and tips that are easy to implement in your own career search.

The majority of boomers want or need to continue working as long as possible. The marketplace has not always been a friendly place for the wisdom and experience of older workers. Career coach Tarnoff is optimistic about the future, with the caveat that boomers must be willing to embrace the new economy in ways that may be out of their comfort zone. His method includes 5 key steps and 23 actionable strategies to give you the confidence and resources necessary to move to the next phase of your career.

Tarnoff also stresses that career reinvention does not necessarily need to be a complete change of direction. It might simply be finding a way to reinvigorate your current work or find a new path in your existing company. Some of Tarnoff’s advice:

1. Don't try to figure out what job or business you can fit into out there in a sea of job postings. Instead, figure out what job or business is already inside you.

2. In order to create a new future, you must reconcile your past. You must first deal with all the old baggage and self-limitations that are likely standing in your way.

3. Stop feeling that having been fired or downsized is shameful. At this point, it's time to be grateful for the lessons those experiences taught you.

Embracing new technology is one of the keys to remaining relevant and capable. Tarnoff recommends using social media for referrals and building relationships in your professional network. He also encourages consultative thinking during the job interview so you are seen as a problem solver, not just an interviewee.

If you have been looking for a practical guide to getting your mojo back in the workplace, BOOMER REINVENTION is the right book at the right time. Good luck in your search for your next career!
