Free to Be You & Me

Freedom and Independence are part of our American DNA. As we move into July and celebrate Independence Day, it is worth exploring these concepts in our daily lives. Maria Shriver, whose family has a long history of service in the United States, recently posted this question at Ideapod: “What does it mean to be an American today and what does freedom mean to you?” She notes that as a country we seem to be more divided than ever by political party ideologies. She has chosen not to add to this negative conversation and instead focus on the pillars of American life that she values most: compassion, empathy, collaboration, care, kindness, love, and acceptance.

So what do freedom and independence mean to you?  Is it life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? Do you celebrate it internally or externally? This month at Silvernest, we’re going to look at it together from many different dimensions and see what we can learn. First, we’ll start by celebrating the courageous men and women who have protected, and continue to protect, the freedoms we hold so dear.

As Silvernesters, you’ve already made the choice to live at home, independently. Your living situation is only part of the equation. We’ve lined up experts to help you maintain financial independence for you, and also for the people you care about. Fraud and scams are growing issues for caregivers of elderly loved ones. We’ll share the latest on what you can do to help them remain independent and safe.

We’ll also take a look at how our approach to life changes as we get older. Why do we feel more free to be ourselves now that we’re at midlife? How is the generation who experienced the women’s movement feeling about getting older? Are you more sexually free at this point in your life? We would love to hear from you on these topics!

Join us as we explore life stages such as caregiving, grandparenting, and end of life and see how different these life stages are for our generation, as opposed to our parents. And talking about our generation… where were you during the Summer of Love? This year is the 50th Anniversary of the ultimate Baby Boomer celebration of freedom!

Summer is here! We hope you are enjoying the warm breezes, sunshine, and time with friends and family. As always, we love to hear from you, so send us a comment here or meet us on Facebook for a great conversation.
