Matt Paxton is one of the country’s top extreme cleaning experts—you might know his name if you were a fan of the popular A&E TV show Hoarders.

Matt is especially passionate about helping older adults declutter and downsize. His expertise and deep compassion stem from the year Matt lost his father, stepfather and both grandfathers. Matt was called upon to help his mother with their possessions. As Matt says, “We had four houses to deal with! I had to figure it out, and I’m still doing it 18 years later.”

As a guest on Silvernest’s Share Your Story podcast, Matt offered a huge insight that transformed how we think about decluttering and downsizing.

For many adult daughters and sons, the idea of Mom or Dad renting out a room in their home to an unknown person is concerning, to say the least. This is not unreasonable—they have likely heard about (or personally experienced) horror stories of questionable roommates from sites like Craigslist. What if the housemate is untrustworthy? What if they take advantage of my mom's generous heart? What if they are careless with my dad's prized collections?

Most U.S. cities have a high population of residents living alone. For some individuals, it’s status, and for others, their life just turned out that way. Although a few prefer singlehood compared to being married, I’m part of the latter group. Living alone carries a heavier burden for the single segment. An individual is solely responsible for rent or mortgage, income and property taxes, utility bills, car expenses, and insurance bills. Sharing doesn’t exist, not even for tough decisions.

Although most of us want to stay in our homes as we age, it can become harder as the years pass. Our children move on and out, our yard and home maintenance is never-ending, and the house seems larger and quieter. With Florida hosting nearly a quarter of the retirement-aged population in America, homesharing is a natural solution for the Sunshine State.

When Working In Retirement Is The Way To Go

Posted by Dave Bernard on Aug 3, 2017 8:50:35 AM

Back when I was working full time I occasionally fantasized of that day in the not-too-distant future when I would no longer be chained to “the job”. It’s not that I hated what I was doing. Far from it – over my working years I met wonderful people, some who have become lifelong friends. I was fortunate enough to play an important part in the growth of numerous small companies where the camaraderie and esprit de corps were as important as making money, sometimes even more. I was inspired by talented bosses who took the time to guide my development. My memories of the working world are for the most part positive.
