Wellness has become a buzzword for a lot of the different aspects of our lives. We thought it was time to unpack the concept and let some experts weigh in on how we create the best life possible, regardless of our age. There is so much information out there about health, food, exercise, sleep and what to do and what not to do – and it seems to change every day!
The Aspects of Wellness
We have been combing through experts and information to bring you up-to-date thinking on a what it means to be “well” and how you can make little changes for big benefits. For example, sleep is hot topic right now. Arianna Huffington even wrote a book about it! But as we know, after we turn 50 getting good rest can be elusive. Let’s see what we can learn!
A lot is being written about “mindfulness.” We were anxious to know what that really means. Is it meditation? Is it a state of mind? What does gratitude have to do with it? The practice of mindfulness is being taught in elementary schools to help children focus. The health benefits for adults are touted for everything from high blood pressure to anxiety to addiction.
2. Contact with Nature
People of every age enjoy higher levels of health and well-being when we have access to nature. We spend so much time indoors, that it is completely, well “natural” that access to nature has been related to lower mortality rates and illness in older adults. Time with the Earth lowers stress and promotes a sense of well-being and connectedness. We are going to dive into what’s trendy about getting outdoors!
3. Activity and Exercise
Nothing has changed more than the field of fitness. Much more than aerobics or pilates, the field of fitness now refers to more than just our healthy body. Mental, or brain fitness, is high on our list of concerns, and certainly understanding the relationship of all aspects of wellness on our brain is critical. Increasingly, the importance of our sexual health is on our radar. Watch for more information on these important topics.
Nourishing our soul is great, but we have to eat! Nothing affects our wellbeing like the fuel we put in our bodies. We are learning so much about the effects that different foods have on our health. Let’s have some fun with super foods, recipes, and all of the fresh foods of summer. We hope you’ll share your favorites with us as well!
